John Vaz, MD

John Vaz, MD

Chief Executive Officer

Dr. John Vaz moved to Maui from Washington, DC, with his family in April 2017, and joined Mālama I Ke Ola Health Center as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) shortly after. He holds board certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease.  Dr. Vaz completed medical school at the St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore, India, in 2006, an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, CT, in 2011, as well as an Infectious Disease fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, MD, in 2013. Following several years in medical leadership, he completed a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, in 2021.

His focus and passion in clinical care include HIV treatment and prevention (including PrEP), Hepatitis B and C management, LGBTQ care including gender affirming care, and medication-assisted treatment of substance use. During his time as CMO at Mālama I Ke Ola Health Center, he focused on helping the organization grow in principles of Trauma Informed Care, raising awareness about social determinants of health and their impact on health and wellness, and promoting both a multidisciplinary team-based & person-centered approach to patient care. Additionally, he worked with different team members at Mālama I Ke Ola to create a gender-affirming primary care clinic, a nursing staff development program, and a medication program for people recovering from opioid use disorder.  In his role as the CEO, he seeks to support the growth of Malama I Ke Ola into a continuous learning organization, with staff who find dignity and joy in practice, while serving patients with trauma-informed healing. He is excited to bring his knowledge and skills in leading the organization and guiding the mission and core values of the health center.

In his free time, he enjoys traveling, exercising, reading, and cooking. He also takes any opportunity available to explore the beautiful island of Maui on hikes or to get out on the water on his paddle board.

Andrew Van Wieren MD, FACP

Andrew Van Wieren MD, FACP

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Van Wieren joined the Mālama I Ke Ola team in 2022 as Chief Medical Officer. Andrew most recently served as Chief Medical Officer at Esperanza Health Centers, a federally-qualified health center in Chicago with about 80 medical and behavioral health providers and about 50,000 unique patients. While at Esperanza, Andrew helped: lead significant clinical and program expansion, guide the organization through an electronic health record transition, develop and implement COVID-19 response, and build a nationally recognized clinical quality program.

Andrew is passionate about health equity, clinical and operational quality, and care team redesign. He graduated from the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University and completed his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Primary Care Internal Medicine Program at Harvard Medical School. Some of his awards and affiliations include the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, Gold Humanism Honor Society, and National Health Service Corps Scholar.

Andrew is excited to join the Mālama ‘ohana, learn about Hawaiian culture, and share life on Maui with his wife and 2 children.

Monique van der Aa

Monique van der Aa

Chief Financial Officer

Monique joined the Executive Team of Mālama I Ke Ola Health Center in August 2018 and brings 19 years of extensive FQHC experience in financial management, operations, electronic practice management systems and medical records, data collection and analysis.

Monique was born in Christchurch, New Zealand where she earned her Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accountancy in 1985. The following year Monique joined Ernst & Young as an auditor and remained there until she became a Chartered Accountant. Soon thereafter, Monique left New Zealand and worked in various accounting roles in Canada, Australia and New Caledonia. She had the good fortune to move to Hawaii in 1996 and has lived here ever since.

When not working, Monique enjoys cycling, swimming, yoga and hiking with family and friends.

Cassie Savell

Cassie Savell

Chief Operating Officer

Cassie was born and raised in Arkansas before moving to Hawaii in 2008. She has been with Mālama I Ke Ola Health Center since 2013, where she previously served as Assistant Chief Financial Officer, and is currently serving as the Chief Operating Officer.

Prior to her career in health care, she held various positions in the supply chain/logistics industry, and has over 16 years of business administration experience to include data, accounting, financial, and economic reporting and analysis, database management, project management, planning and forecasting, process improvement, as well as budget and operational management. She also has extensive knowledge and experience working with data and statistical analysis, as well as market and economic research.
Cassie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Investment Management as well as a Master of Business Administration from the University of Arkansas, a Master of Health Administration from Louisiana State University, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate degree in Health Sciences at A.T. Still University. She is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

When Cassie isn’t working or studying, she enjoys cooking and going to the beach with her husband, Chance, daughter, Abigail, and Golden Retriever, Mauka.

Linda Kay Whitney, SPHR, SHRM-SCP

Linda Kay Whitney, SPHR, SHRM-SCP

Chief Human Resources Officer

Linda Kay is Mālama I Ke Ola Health Center’s Chief Human Resources Officer. She holds dual certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and Society of Human Resource Management-Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) with over 30 years in Human Resources in Hawaii and California. She has been on Maui since 2001. Linda Kay’s HR leadership roles have been in community and education services, medical device, pharmaceutical, health care, and hospitality organizations. She volunteers for SHRM Hawaii and serves on various committees. Prior to entering the HR field, Linda Kay was an accountant.

Linda Kay supported Mālama I Ke Ola Health Center from May 2016 through June 2017 as a human resources consultant and joined the clinic as HR Director in August 2018. Her degrees are in Management from University of Phoenix and Santa Barbara City College respectively.
